ToI issue ends as Pradeep Thakur apologizes before Nyishi community

ITANAGAR Feb 18: The infamous ToI issue was brought to a conclusion today with senior Times of India journalist Pradeep Thakur, who hurt the sentiment of Nyishi community with a derogatory report published in May 2011, apologizing to the Nyishi community at Banquet Hall here. Members of Nyishi community including representatives of Nyishi Elite Society (NES) led by its president Bengia Tolum, All Nyishi Students Union (ANSU) led by its president Sikka Gapak, Nyishi MLAs, senior citizens of Nyishi community and MP Takam Sanjoy were present during the meeting which was presided over by Chief Minister Nabam Tuki.
While addressing the large gathering, Pradeep Thakur expressed deep regret for hurting the sentiments of Nyishi community with his report. “I am very sorry for hurting the emotion of Nyishi people. I am very sorry to know that people of Arunachal, particularly the capital citizens, had faced so much of trouble in the form of bandh calls and violence because of my report. I never intend to hurt sentiments of Nyishi people. I apologize for my mistake and hope that Nyishi people will forgive me,” Pradeep Thakur said. Further he added, “I also come from a small town and I can understand the pain of Nyishi people. I am deeply apologetic from bottom of my heart. Please believe me and trust me. I am apologizing with lot of sincerity and let me make one thing clear I had no malafide intention.”
Asked to reveal the source of information, Thakur said, ethics of journalism do not allow him to reveal. “It’s a known fact all over the world that journalists are not supposed to reveal the source of information. Therefore I cannot reveal my source too. I hope the educated and matured people of Arunachal understand about ethics of journalism,” said Pradeep Thakur.
During the day an agreement was signed between Nyishi Elite Society, All Nyishi Students Union and Times of India to end the issue amicably. The content of agreement was read out to the gathering by MP Takam Sanjoy. Chief Minister Nabam Tuki while addressing the gathering told that with this historic occasion, Pradeep Thakur issue has become a ‘dead issue’. “I had promised to give justice to Nyishi community by making Pradeep Thakur apologize to community members in Itanagar. I have delivered my promise. With this, the Pradeep Thakur issue has ended and it is time to move ahead. The time has come for us to concentrate in developmental and economic issues confronting the people of Arunachal,” said Tuki.
NES President Bengia Tolum expressed satisfaction over the apology tendered by Pradeep Thakur. “Arunachal has witnessed social tension and suffered economic loses because of Pradeep Thakur issue. But today Pradeep Thakur has apologized to us in front of Nyishi people here in Itanagar. We accept his apology,” said Tolum. ANSU President Sikka Gapak also spoke on the occasion.

Mr. Pradeep Thakur asserted in the discussion that it was not his intention to hurt the feelings of people of Arunachal, in particular the Nyishi community, the newspaper, the Times of India, carried a clarification that there was no intention to hurt the sentiments of the people of Arunachal Pradesh and regretted the unintentional offence. Mr Pradeep Thakur also apologized to the people of Arunachal Pradesh and the Nyishi Community in audio/video form.
Mr. Pradeep Thakur said in the discussion that professional ethics constraint him not to disclose the source from which he had gathered the information for the news article that appeared on the web portal. Accordingly, the NES and ANSU have accepted it.

ITANAGAR Feb 18: Arunachal Pradesh Governor General (Retd) J J Singh today called upon the youth to inherit the leadership qualities of ‘follow me’, ‘leading from the front’, ‘leading by examples’ and ‘fight to win’, while delivering a lecture on ‘Youth Leadership’ in a seminar cum workshop held at Rajiv Gandhi University, Rono Hills, Doimukh.
Governor Singh said that leadership is both an art and a science. There are some potential leaders who are born with a silver spoon in their mouths but only those of them become great leaders who are mould and trained by their parents, teachers, life’s experiences and their own effort. While most other leaders are born in humbler backgrounds, but with right genes and proper training, grooming and hard work, they develop and hone their leadership abilities and seize the opportunities that life offers. He added that a leader has got to have a ‘winning streak’. The leader has to have that fire within, which spurs him or her on to greater accomplishment whatever be the situation.

Provide better service to achieve revenue targets: Gamlin
ITANAGAR, Feb 18: Transport and Cooperation Minister Jarkar Gamlin visited Tirap and newly created Longding district from February 15 to 16 last.
During the visit, Gamlin inspected the office of the station superintendent, Arunachal Pradesh State Transport, Khonsa, one of the oldest stations established in 1975 and held meeting with the officers and staffs and heard their grievances.
While addressing a meeting, Gamlin exhorted the employees to be sincere, dedicated and hard working and to provide better bus service to the public so as to achieve the revenue targets fixed by the department.

Citrus fruit production in Arunachal discouraging

PASIGHAT, Feb 18: Despite enormous potentialities in Citrus fruits production in the hilly terrain and foothills of Arunachal Pradesh, the state is yet to make any remarkable achievement in this field.
Low rate production of citrus fruit in North Eastern region is drawing attention of the agricultural experts, who have suggested a comprehensive policy by the state governments to boost the horticultural sector.

Talking to this correspondent, the dean of CHF, B N Hazarika informed that as many as 20 species/types of Citrus fruits are found in Arunachal hills. Most of the commercially cultivated species of citrus fruits are grown in sub tropical region. Though Siang belt is the main orange cultivation area, however, large scale production of citrus is found in Changlang, Tirap and Subansiri districts. Apart from temperate zone, orange grown in other zones in Arunachal are of superior quality, he said.
The CHF, established under Central Agricultural University has undertaken measures to boost the horticultural activities and to enhance quality of citrus fruits in the region. It has launched a project to share practical knowledge on citrus cultivation with growers. Under the project, the experts impart training to the citrus growers on use of scientific method for quality citrus production.

The functionaries of RAYF also decried the alleged inaction of the authority towards erosion posed by the Ruksin Korong, a perennial stream flowing down nearby the SDO’s residential quarter. The stream has been unabatedly eroding its right bank threatening the existence of many government buildings and other structures.
West Kameng reviews security scenario
BOMDILA, Feb 18: West Kameng district administration in a meeting held here yesterday reviewed the security scenario of the district before the end of this financial year. The meeting participated by Superintendent of Police, magistrates, HODs and DDOs of the district assumed significance as reports and instances of people armed with firearms intimidating heads of the department and DDOs had surfaced during last financial year ending.
Taking serious note of such unruly activities by a few which in turn jeopardizes the developmental activities of the district, Deputy Commissioner Rinchin Tashi said that it has tarnished the image of much acclaimed land of peace and tranquility.
A mobile Police unit with a Magistrate has been set up for round the clock patrolling of government offices and residential colonies. The Police Control room would be manned round the clock for effective monitoring of law and order.
DC Tashi urged the HODs and the DDOs to report immediately to the law enforcing authorities if such incidents occur again. He said the safety and security of the people is of utmost importance and such matters unheard of, in previous years at Bomdila, would be dealt with iron hand, he said.

Teacher Anura Thamoung speaking about the ‘Niti Bhalla Trophy’ informed that Niti Bhalla’s (29 July 1955 – 27 April 2010) simple approach towards life reflected her beauty. Life’s challenges, never diminished her ability to make others forget their own woes. She touched the lives of almost everyone she met. Niti studied at Loreto Convent, Lucknow, graduated from LSR, Delhi before entering the travel trade, working with airlines like Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines. As a child she spent much time in Assam tea gardens, creating a strong bond with the Northeast. Her father a mechanical engineer in the railways, also served as the General Manager of the Northeast Frontier Railways headquartered in Guwahati. She last visited the region in 2005. Towards the end of 2009 she was diagnosed with lung cancer, which brutally cut short her life. She is survived by her daughter Manavi. The Niti Bhalla Trophy is instituted in her memory by her younger sister, Dipti Bhalla Verma, who is the author of the Northeast Trilogy.
A school health programme was also organized jointly by the DMO, Tezu and ASSET. Wakro EAC Tuli Gangkak inaugurated a Eye Care camp which was conducted by Dr A Wailong, Eye Specialist from the district hospital, Tezu.
Dr Wailong screened 148 cases detecting 25 cases of refractive error. 19 cases were corrected and the specialist referred 6 cases to Assam Medical College Hospital, Dibrugarh. Amit Bhoumik and Devendra Yadav of Tezu contributed immensely by rendering personal support to the Eye Camp. Gangkak appreciated the yeoman service and called upon all to support such initiatives of social uplift. The EAC later gave away the annual prizes to the students.
VKAJ organizes free surgery camp
ITANAGAR, Feb 18: Vivekananda Kendra Arun Jyoti (VKAJ), Arunachal Pradesh conducted a free surgical camp in collaboration with Remote Area Medical (RAM) Corp., Knoxville, USA at Central Hospital of Coal India Ltd., Margherita, Assam from February 12 to 17 last.
A total 34 patients were operated upon successfully for various ailments by a team of six NRI doctors during the camp.
59 endoscopy tests were also conducted free of cost and medicines provided to the
patients. Mitra Medical Services LLP provided endoscopy machines with experts. Further,

India is the only country in world that is near developed or developing country in economics front without having developed education system. The result is based on reliable facts and figures of united nation organization. Indian rank is very poor on human development index in the world. It ranked 141 out of 173 countries in the overall education index in the year 2000. In Human Development Index in 2001 India ranked 127 out of 175 countries with China and Vietnam respectively at 104th and 109th position. India belongs to "Information Poor" group in the world. Only three India universities have got place in first 500 universities in the world whereas there are more than 15 such Chinese universities. Improved human resources generation is accepted over the whole of world as one of the sound strategies for competitive advantages in the age of globalization. Need of the hour is to give highest priority to improve human resources vis a vis education sectors. In coming age of knowledge economy, knowledge will be main source of power to which human resources will play the key role. India can not and should not ignore this basic rule of developing India in changed scenario.
The quantitative axis of improving human resource generation in India has an acute
problem associated with population growth whose effect is the increase in gross enrolment
ratio. This ratio expressed as a percentage of the population in only tertiary education
in India had jumped from 4.9% in 1970 to 6.5% in 1995. Again it does not mean that
generation of human resources is significant in India. In 1990, the total number
of scientist and engineers per million population was 2807, 1665, 158, 3317 and 109
respectively in the Developed countries, the Europe, the Developing countries, USA
and India. This reflects the poor position of India. India needs to generate improved
human resources by opening more and more colleges and universities. Analysis of the
technical education will be relevant as in recent past private investment to increase
man power generation in technical education has been increased manifold in India.

NCC camp
ITANAGAR, Feb 18: A NCC camp was conducted from February 8 to 17 at 18 Assam Rifles camp situated at Jairampur. Around 260 NCC cadets took part in the camp. They underwent training in PT, Drill, Map Reading and Navigation. The 18th Assam Rifles conducted Weapon and Equipment display on 14th of this month. Special lecture was conducted by Unit Doctor Capt Sridevi Thapa, RMO regarding body mass index, nutrition, HIV/AIDS, drug abuse, tropical climate diseases and its prevention and cure.
Besides the NCC cadets were given opportunity to trek to Pangsau Pass. A cultural programme was presented by 26 Assam Independent Company NCC cadets. Colonel B S Saini in his opening address mentioned about all the activities conducted in coordination with 18 Assam Rifles. A total of 260 cadets were presented. The Colonel R S Chauhan, Commandant and his wife attended the opening programme.

Seppa traders to stage dharna
ITANAGAR, Feb 18: All the business community and general public of Seppa unanimously decided to stage dharna before the DC and SP offices on February 22 in favour of the demands which include arrest of the culprits who had damaged the EKCCI office recently. The decision was taken in a general meeting organized jointly by BWCS & EKCC&I at Abotani Manch Main Bazar line, Seppa today.
The meeting further resolved that all the shops of Seppa town will remain closed for indefinite period if the District Administration fails to meet the demands within 5 days.
Apprehend culprits, ANYA demands

APCF conducts health & educational awareness campaign
ITANAGAR, Feb 18: Various educational and health related issues, including HIV/AIDS have been discussed in details during the first ever social, educational tour programme and awareness campaign of Arunachal Pradesh Colleges’ Forum (APCF) at Indira Gandhi College, Tezu yesterday.
The students were made aware of the causes and various modes of spreading HIV/AIDS and their preventive measures by APCF president Techi Raman. He said that no case of HIV/AIDS has been reported so far from Indira Gandhi College, Tezu.
Senior medical officer Dr. Sophia Shullai, who was also present, expressed concern over growing HIV/AIDS cases in Lohit. He advised the students to get themselves tested for the HIV regularly.
Meanwhile, APCF demanded the authority concerned to introduce science stream at IGG College in the greater interest of the people of the district. It also urged for providing sufficient faculties, classrooms in the college and erecting boundary walls around boys and girls hostels of the college.
Tadar Eachu memorial football tournament

Attack condemned
ITANAGAR, Feb 18: All Tali Pipsorang Capital Dweller Welfare Association (ATPCDWA) alleged that two persons have suffered grievous injurious when a group of miscreants attacked them at Nirjuli near NERIST complex today morning at around 9.45 am.
The injured Yurna Taja and Gyaniu Talo have been admitted at RKM Hospital for treatment, the association said.
When contacted, police confirmed the incident.
Prior to this incident, the miscreants had raided and destroyed the common house constructed for the people of Tali and Pipsorang at Nirjuli twice on February 14 and 17, the association claimed.
The association said, an FIR was lodged with Nirjuli police against the miscreants yesterday.
While condemning the barbaric act of those miscreants, ATPCDWA demanded the authority to take immediate action against the culprits and punish them as per law.
No formal Losar celebration

Late Takuk was a patriot, artist and a dynamic leader of Upper Siang district. He possessed an amiable disposition with an endearing personality and was loved by all section of the society, said the former CM in a condolence message.
His untimely demise has caused irreparable loss not only to the entire members of his family but also to the people of Upper Siang district and the state as a whole, Apang said adding the void created by his death will be very difficult to fill up.
His valuable service and contribution to the Society shall always be remembered, the message said.
